1998 provided yet another
successful year of deer hunting for Capable Partners
members. For those of you unfamiliar with this hunt, the
roughly 1900 acres of the airport presents challenges not
normally associated with typical big woods or cropland
deer hunting. The airport borders highways, hangers,
soccer fields, and homes. In addition, a public road
dissects part of the hunting area. With close encounters
of this type. SAFETY IS OUT #1 CONCERN!As always, making this hunt possible for us were
Dwight McKenzie and Jack Eberlein of MAC (Metropolitan
Airport Commissions). Working closely with them, we were
able to hold both archery and shotgun deer hunts. Two
deer were taken Next up was a series of organized drives or pushes orchestrated by Paul Evans (drive master) and the "Professional Drivers". By the end of the first day, the total harvest was eighteen deer, two more than last years record breaking opener of sixteen deer. When the four day, two week-end hunt ended twenty-seven deer were harvested. Twenty-one of the deer harvested were bucks! A total of twenty-nine deer for the year including those taken during the archery season.
There were many laughs, many misses, many doughnuts, and a good time shared and appredciated only by those of us who experienced airport deer camp 1998. Thanks again to Matt Kuker of Pro Sporting Goods in Ramsey for donation of a new Polaris 6X6 ATV, to the professional drivers, and of course, the Metropolitan Airport Commission. | Carlos Avery Deer Camp
opened October 17, 1998 and closed the cabin door on
October 25, 1998. There was twenty plus hunters signed up
this year. We had a number of new hunters and a couple of
first time deer hunters. The "old verterans" of
the Carlos Deer Camp made up the rest of the crew.
Something different this year was the weather. It was
great compared to the rain and snow we have had in years
past The first deer was taken opening morning by one of our new hunters. Something else special about the first deer is that is was her first time deer hunting and the first shot she ever fired at a deer. Yep you got it right the first deer was by one of our first time, lady hunters. Congratulations to Leslie Poole on her spike buck, her first of many more to come, I hope. There was another special deer taken thisyear that has a unique story. We will have to have her tell us at the game feed this year. Yep, another first for one of our other lady hunters, Lisa Murphy. Lisa took a big doe. It was her first time at Carlos Deer Camp. Congratulations to Lisa, and to her husband, who I think was as happy as Lisa about the deer.We wrapped up the week in good shape with a number of more deer seen and shots fired for a total of seven deer. Our Iowa boy scored on a little one, congratulations to Pat Moore. The one that got the big deer last year took a little one this year. Congratulations to John Frazer. Two more hunters Rick McCoy and Jim Spansaven scored on deer this year. Congratulations to both of you! Thank you to Roger Hauck, Dan Rodde and Lloyd Knutson. These are the guys that make this happen every year. Thank you to the rest of the crew at Carlos for all their help and to all the hunter helpers that made this a very successful year at Carlos Deer Camp. Greg Runyon, Deer Hunting Coordinator |
