Muskie Fishing on Lake Independence
This
years Lake Independence Muskie fishing was one of the
most enjoyable outings Capable Partners has ever had.
One of our members landed a 29 incher! Ronald Moen used
a Tamden Spin (his own tackle) to hall in the big fish
Ronald is
a little slow and hard of hearing, but he moved fast on
that fish and I think everyone all around the lake could
hear his excitement. Congrats Ronald on your first
Muskie!
Many
reports from other members on follow ups, hits and
misses. A few Northerns were caught and the coordinator
got a largemouth bass on a big Muskie top water lure.
Twelve CP members participated with the same number
guides. Three from each group, so teams evened up for
the boats.
Twin
Cities Chapter of Muskie Inc. put on a lunch of burgers,
brats and chicken with all the extras. Great job and a
big thanks to all the members for making this outing one
for us never to forget!
Next
year, eliminate the weather decision from your equation.
Just plan on coming. While the weather forecast was
poor, it never rained, great food and big muskies were
there to be caught and released.
Thanks
again Twin Cities Chapter of Muskies, Inc.

Walleye Fishing on Lake Mille Lacs
Neither
road detours, nor rain, nor mayflies could alter the
course of our quest to capture and consume the Minnesota
Walleye. We left the cities early for Lake Mille Lacs
and planned to appreciate the sunrise as we sipped
coffee from the thermos and drove north into walleye
country. One couldn't help but notice as the sun started
to rise that there seemed to be torrents of black coming
from the clouds off in the distance. Like true
fisherman, we took no heed as we had packed our rain
gear. We headed north.
Our
timing was great as we arrived along with several other
members. Some of our crew, who had arrived the evening
earlier, were still having breakfast at Fisher's Resort.
We totaled over 35 participants. Another well attended
outing!
As
we loaded the boat for our 8:00 a.m. departure the rain
pounded, the thunder shouted, the lightening cracked and
then it was done. There was sun and blue skies, a
beautiful breeze and plenty of friendship and bonding.
Thanks to
St. Michael's American Legion and Dan Psyk for
sponsoring another successful Capable Partners event!

Bayfield Fishing with Captain Dan
Once again Lake Superior surrendered her own as two boat
loads of "Partners" took to her waters over the August
28th, 1998 weekend. As a door prize winner of Captain
Dan Nourses Bayfield, Wisconsin expedition, I and
several friends chartered the good Captain's boat on
Saturday, the 29th, ostensibly to learn the ropes. My
companions for the day included Terry Hanson, Dave
Heidke, Tom Stevens and the aforementioned, Captain Dan,
pilot of Blackhawk II. Chief Boatswain Heidke displayed
a depth of knowledge deeper than Superior herself, as he
lectured us on local folklore and historical tidbits.
His keen eye and clever wit evoked a longing for the
days of yore, when the Pioneers actually burned this
type of "BS" for firewood. Nevertheless, the seas stayed
calm, the sun stayed hot, and merriment filled the air -
so much so - that before long a cooler of Lake Trout
joined in the festivities and rode with us back to
shore.
Soon
after docking and while cleaning the days catch, we were
met by Sunday's participants (the other winners of the
door prize and crew), Mark Ryan, Jim Sinner, Roy Knafla,
and "Young Joe" Knafla. After Saturday's catch was put
on ice and the boat made ready for Sunday, we all headed
to one of Bayfield's eateries to dine and have a
beverage - or two. While there, a local wedding party
took over the saloon, celebrating conversations were
soon drowned out by the happy (and noisy) crowd. Shortly
thereafter the revelers departed, taking with them our
applause, cheers and best wishes. An early evening was
called for as breakfast was to be served at six and
Blackhawk II was to depart at seven. Sunday found the
sun showing bright, and the wind not showing at all. And
the fish - well, for a while we thought they had
hightailed it out of there after witnessing the
onslaught the previous day. But our virtuous patience
was rewarded and before the day was over another cooler
was brimming with Lake Trout. Deckhand "Young Joe",
commissioned himself official fish "wacker" (worthy of
French Revolutionary standing), thus assuring a minimum
of noise and fuss from inside the cooler - way to go,
Joe!
And so it
was back to shore for cleaning (fish and boat), grabbing
a bite, loading up and driving home. It has been several
years now that Captain Dan has provided a day on his
boat to Capable Partners. On behalf of our group, I'd
like to thank this talented and skillful boat driver,
one who knows how to read the weather and even those
neat little blips on the fish finders - cool! Thanks
again Dan, we all had a great time.
